Classification
The animal, the tapir, is categoried into the animal kingdom, which separates the different kinds of organisms, based on their characteristics. A tapir is a phylum, meaning it is a vertebrate (it has a spinal cord). The tapir is a mammal as it has warm blood, and gives birth to live young. The tapir is a herbivore, which means that it only eats plants. The tapir lives in the family of the tapiridae, and its genus (a more specific group), is classified as a perissodactyl, meaning it is relative to animals such as a horse, rhino and odd-toed ungulates. Tapirs are then classified into a specific species, such as tapirus indicus. |
